While XST has come a long way over the years, Synplify ( Pro) has been a class act for most of its time on the market. XST was originally intended to be a tool that gives access to parts, especially new devices and their added functionality. But as XST has become a more formidable tool, the cooperation between Xilinx and Synplify has been stellar, keeping the early access to new features pretty solid. The Synplify line gives an added advantage: vendor agnostic coding. If you end up forced out of using a XIlinx product, you don't have to change your design tools andlearn all over again how to convince the tool to produce the results that you want. The HDL Analyst that's included in the Synplify Pro tool gives a more natural visualization of the implementation of your code compared to the Xilinx visualizer. I'm very happy that Xilinx introduced the visualizer a while back but the Synplify version just feels so much more intuitive both in operation and understanding. It's expensive. If you spend 10 months out of the year doing FPGA work or you have constant FPGA development going on between several engineers, I would highly recommend Synplify Pro or at least Synplify with the HDL Analyst option.
